FAST FASHION: LANDFILL

In a time when innovation and low costs are more important than quality, fast fashion has risen to become the second largest contributor to pollution and landfill. The rising demand for disposable garments calls for massive productions of cheap clothes, which are thrown away after an average of seven disappointing wears. In Australia alone, over 500,000 tons of textile and leather are thrown back into waste to decompose for 200 years. Not only has fast fashion affected landfill, rivers and waterways have become poisoned as well; the consequence of dumping hazardous chemicals into the water are affecting locals and nearby habitats. However, the disturbing facts of this industry have been shoved to the back of closets and ignored by the public. We brush off the grim details the second a large “30% SALE” appears in our sight. It’s time to realize that the supposed “low-cost” of our clothes are in fact costing lives and our environment.
